Gold Cap!

Gold Cap

Gold Cap

I finally did it!  This morning I hit the gold cap.  Actually I probably hit it last night but I had it in my head that the cap was 217K gold so did the usual thing of banking my surplus (I try to keep around 10,000 gold on my banker to work with and bank the rest as it comes in).  This morning as I unloaded my mail and banked the rest I realised that I had 207,000 gold in my guild bank which, with the 10,000 on my banker, should put me at the cap. Then I went and check exactly how much the cap was an realised that I had actually broken through it.  Of course my banker had to clear out the guild bank to pose for a photo.

Taking Stock

I decided to try and take an overall look at how my AH adventures have shaped up since I started back in October.  I cleared Beancounter down about a week after I started in earnest so these figures aren’t quite the whole picture but I would say they give a pretty good idea of where my gold has been going and coming from.  I started out with about 7,000 gold on my banker; I already had a guild bank with 3 tabs which, basically, were full of crap.  I threw 95% of it on the AH and what didn’t sell got vendored.  The figures below are from the last week in October up to tonight.

Auctionator

Although I have had Auctioneer for years I hadn’t made heavy use of it until I started seriously playing the AH.  When I started posting glyphs I started to run into serious performance issues, plus I never really got the hang of features like snatch.  Looking around the various gold-making blogs I occasionally came across references to an AH addon called Auctionator.  Once I installed it I seriously fell for it.  Auctionator can be downloaded from Curse or from the author’s own website which also has a lot of additional information about how to get the best out of it.  While it doesn’t have as many features as Auctioneer, for simple buying and selling it is very easy to use, takes little setting up and has no performance issues at all.  It is a very powerful tool in its own right.

Patch 3.3 AH Madness

Well, the patch has finally hit.  I was due back at work on the night shift on Wednesday night so I haven’t had a chance yet to try out the new instances or the the LFG tool but what I have been able to do is post auctions.  As soon as the server came up on Wednesday morning I logged in on my scribe,  bought the new recipes and made a stack of each new glyph.  I put them on the AH at 70G each and was quite surprised when the mage glyph started selling straight away.  I managed to sell around 10 before one of my major competitors logged in and dropped the price in one fell swoop to 12G.

Labels

It is part of human nature to categorise people, those who are like us and those who are not.  In all aspects of our lives we often come down to “them and us”.  “Us” is comfortable and reassuring, them is different, sometimes beyond our comprehension, sometimes threatening; mostly though just different.  People also have a tendency to label and stereotype.  This isn’t necessarily a bad thing, it can be a kind of shorthand providing everyone understands what the labels mean and that they are not used to represent the whole of a person; that they are used as a starting point, not to completely sum a person up.  Stereotypes don’t have to be bad as long as we recognise where they come from and that they are generalisations, they are not representative of the whole and that they may be exaggerated.  Of course, there can be a very negative side to labels and stereotypes.  They can be derogatory and demeaning; they can be founded on hidden agendas and perpetuate untruths.

I Did It!

I had my first 5K profit day!  I have been ploughing a lot of my spare cash into Frost Lotus when they come within my price limit.  I like to make large numbers at once because I think the proc gods are more likely to be benevolent when I’m making 60 than when I’m making 10.  A lot of “cheap” Frost Lotus came onto the market on Sunday and Monday and on Monday morning my banker had about 300G left on him, plus a couple of thousand gold in the Guild Bank which was my “don’t touch” money.  I had good days on Monday and Tuesday, my income was over 5K on both days but it wasn’t all profit.  On Wednesday was maintenance and the raid reset.  Wednesday night was stellar!  The only downside is that I have a very bad cold and felt too ill to stay up and let all my mail come in.  I posted flasks all through tea-time, posting as quickly as they were selling, occasionally hanging back when the price dropped below my minimum sell price.  I logged in the next day to 1800G in my mailbox, most of which had sold the previous evening so the total for the day was nearer 8.5K profit.

Oh My!

I managed to pull in 5K today!  It wasn’t all profit, I spent a fair bit too, but my banker is now carrying around 10K.  I was a bit worried at the weekend because he’d had to raid the guild bank to buy 2 stacks of Frost Lotus that come on at 41G per herb.  I was down to my last couple of K gold and thinking that I couldn’t spend any more on anything.   Thankfully I got very lucky with the elixir proc; I had one that produced 10 flasks!  I had the mats for 80 flasks and ended up with 116 which all sold for between 32G -  35G.  The money also started rolling in from the saronite shuffle plus my big bank garage sale produced quite a bit too.

What Goes Around, Comes Around

Today I saw a very interesting post by Tella.  She talked about a book scribes could make that turns the player into a wolf. I’d never heard of it before but looked it up on Wowhead and it didn’t look difficult to farm.  Within half an hour I had learned the pattern and hit the AH for some Eternal Shadow and some herbs to make the required ink.  I made 10 and put 2 on the AH and a shout-out in the Trade channel.  Within 2 minutes the first one had sold!  They generated quite a bit of interest; I had a whisper from a pally wanting to know where it dropped so he could go farm it himself.  I was tempted to make something up and send him off on a fruitless quest in the back of beyond but restrained myself and told him it was a crafted item.

Goblin My Way To Riches

Well, hopefully!  I have been following Gevlon the Greedy Goblin and Just My Two Copper for some time and have finally plucked up the courage to try my hand at some money-making ventures.  Back at the start of WoW the friend who got me started in WoW used to spend hours in the AH and always seemed to have plenty of cash.  I remember being horrified when she cheerfully spent 1G to buy me a guild tabard, it seemed a huge amount!  Back then I had no idea that green quality items were better and could be sold; I used to vendor them then grind for ages to buy replacement armour from the Leather Armour vendor as I outgrew the gear I was crafting for myself *hangs head in shame*  When I made the dangerous journey from Teladrassil to Ironforge I was agog when she showed me the (then, only) Auction House.  When she explained about green and blue quality items I could have cried.  I was scrabbling about for coppers to train and I’d been flogging greens to the vendor!  When she explained about how she was using the AH (basically she was flipping) it all seemed very arcane.

LFM Need Tank

I’m back on the night shifts and as usual it’s all or nothing.  Without wanting to put a hex on the shift, so far tonight it’s mostly nothing so I have been catching up on WoW Bash.  These days the genuinely funny items seem fewer and further between but this one did make me smile.   There is the obvious issue that, apart from the priest who may be a healer, there is no ranged DPS in that group; it also made me smile that in a group of 8, 7 are plate-wearers and they are looking for a tank!
